Abstract

This chapter talks about intensive care. This chapter is divided into three sections that cover the essentials of pediatric sedation, pediatric risk of mortality: application in pediatric intensive care unit, and practical aspects of mechanical ventilation for beginners. Pain in children is a misunderstood sensation since children are often too young to verbalize pain. It is now known that even neonates experience pain or fear and show physiologic response to painful stimuli. Unfortunately, pediatric practitioners rarely use premedication for children undergoing painful procedures due to various factors, e.g. failure to recognize pain, ignorance about drugs and dosages, fear of adverse effects, especially cardiovascular, etc. Mechanical ventilatory support has saved many lives and changed the outcome to a larger extent in critical care areas. Many pediatricians have taken up the responsibility of saving children and neonates by initiating mechanical ventilation in peripheral areas.
