Fundamentals of Surgical Pathology

by Shameem Shariff

The aim of this book is to focus on the fundamentals of surgical pathology. Surgical pathology is the study of tissues removed from living patients during surgery to help diagnose a disease and determine a treatment plan. Often, the surgical pathologist provides consultation services in a wide variety of organ systems and medical subspecialties. This book consists of 19 chapters, which include female genital tract, male genital system: grossing techniques, urinary system, salivary glands, gastrointestinal tract, liver and gallbladder, pancreas, respiratory system, lymphoreticular system, breast, thyroid and parathyroid glands, skin, bone, soft tissue, pediatric neoplasms, cardiovascular system, brain and meninges, and immunohistochemistry in surgical pathology. A complete chapter on Immunohistochemistry has been introduced considering its usage in modern practices. This gives details on all antigens with regard to their origin, use on tissues, their positivity in various tumors and the differentiating features of their staining patterns. Immunohistochemistry is a double-edged sword and can do more harm than good if taken out of context of the clinical and morphological setting. This book is useful for the surgical pathologists, both seniors and juniors in their task of reporting.
