Chemical injuries to the eye are an ophthalmic emergency that can be very devastating and result in significant ocular damage. Most injuries are mild but may be severe depending on the concentration and potency as well as the duration of exposure to the chemical agent. The severity of these injuries ranges from mild irritation to corneal opacification, loss of vision, and even loss of the eye. Various chemicals can cause trauma to the eye including alkali, acids, and even topical ocular medications. While each chemical has different effects on the eye, the treatment plan is similar in all cases. Fortunately, research in the field has produced new treatment strategies leading to improved management of chemical injuries to the eye.
