The fs-laser is an infrared laser that functions with considerably less heat stress than other laser systems. Its use enables surgeons to separate corneal tissue precisely without a scalpel. The tissue should be largely transparent so that the laser can develop its full effect. A second extremely elegant and innovative use of the fs-laser in the area of refractive surgeries for ametropia treatment is the intrastromal correction of ametropia e.g. presbyopia. Although this application is presently in the phase of clinical studies to receive approval, the future of the fs-laser is likely in its intrastromal use. In the second section, we will report on the surgical experience gained during a clinical multicenter study.
