Epiphora is a very common symptom and will become more common in an aging population. The eliminated amount of tears should be, usually, equal to its secretion. When there is a change on this equilibrium, a dry eye or tearing eye will occur. Lacrimation is different from epiphora. Lacrimation is due to a hypersecretion of tears; epiphora is due to decreased tear elimination. In both conditions there is more tear production than the capacity of reabsortion.
