Abstract

Despite of being one of the oldest known ocular conditions – possibly since about three millennia, according to the Susruta Samitha´s manuscript, and the subject of one of the ophthalmic surgical procedures most frequently performed throughout the world, pterygium still poses a disturbing therapeutic challenge. The main complication of pterygium management remains its often pertinacious tendency to recur. A clear understanding of pterygium pathogenesis and the recognition of the clinical features that indicate risk of recidival are the basis for its successful management.
