by Raj Kumar

Aims & Scope

THE INDIAN JOURNAL OF CHEST DISEASES AND ALLIED SCIENCES is published quarterly, by the Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, University of Delhi, Delhi in association with the National College of Chest Physicians (India). The Journal covers the Clinical and Experimental work dealing with all aspects of Chest Diseases and Allied Sciences. It publishes Original Articles, Review Articles, Radiology Forum, Case Report, Short Communications, Book Reviews.

Ownership and Management

The Indian Journal of Chest Diseases and Allied Sciences (IJCDAS) is owned and managed under the auspices of Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute (VPCI), University of Delhi, in association with the National College of Chest Physicians (India), and Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd is the publisher.

The Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute (VPCI) is a unique postgraduate medical institution devoted to the study of chest diseases. It is a University of Delhi-maintained institution and is funded entirely by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The institute is ideally located in the heart of the main campus of the University of Delhi, providing the requisite academic environment. The institute fulfils the national need for providing relief to a large number of patients in the community suffering from chest diseases. It has eminently discharged its role and earned a unique place in the field of chest medicine. The main objectives of VPCI have been to conduct research on basic and clinical aspects of chest medicine, to train postgraduates in pulmonary medicine and allied subjects, to develop new diagnostic technology and disseminate scientific knowledge related to chest medicine to other institutions in the country, and to provide specialised clinical and investigative services to patients.

Brief History: The need for a teaching and research institute in chest diseases was spelled out in the Bhore Committee Report (Ministry of Health) by highlighting an acute paucity of trained personnel in the specialty of chest diseases in the country. The Directorate of the Ministry of Health, Government of India, therefore, approached Sir Maurice Gwyer, the then Vice-Chancellor, University of Delhi, to start a course in chest diseases at the earliest possible date. In 1946, the committee constituted by the Vice-Chancellor for this purpose recommended the establishment of a Chest Institute. A proposal to this effect was accordingly formulated by the Vice-Chancellor and submitted to the Government. Utilizing the teaching and training facilities of the Lady Hardinge Medical College, Irwin and Silver Jubilee Hospitals in Delhi, a diploma course in chest diseases was started in 1947 with Dr. R. Viswanathan, the then Deputy Director General, Health Services, Government of India, as the Honorary Director of the course. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the then Deputy Prime Minister of India, laid the foundation stone of the Institute on April 6, 1949. Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, the then Union Minister of Health, formally opened the Institute on January 12, 1953, and Dr. R. Viswanathan was appointed as the first Director of the VPCI. The hospital wing, Viswanathan Chest Hospital [formerly known as the Clinical Research Centre (CRC)], was started around 1956. It was inaugurated by the then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, on October 24, 1957.

The IJCDAS was founded in the year 1959 by (late) Prof. Raman Vishwanathan, the Founder-Director of the Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute (VPCI), as an official publication of the VPCI and the Indian Association for Chest Diseases [renamed as the National College of Chest Physicians (India) in 1976]. The journal was published as "Indian Journal of Chest Diseases" from 1959 to 1975, and it was renamed "The Indian Journal of Chest Diseases and Allied Sciences" in 1976. Prof. Viswanathan single-handedly nurtured this journal to make it an authoritative medical journal in chest medicine. The publication of a journal 50 years ago, when there were no computers and other technologies as of today, was a herculean task. It would also have been an uphill task to have quality scientific papers when only a very few medical institutions in India were engaged in serious medical research. The first issue of the Indian Journal of Chest Diseases was released in July 1959 under the chairmanship of Prof. R. Viswanathan. After the demise of Prof. Viswanathan, Prof. Autar Singh Paintal, an eminent physiologist and former Director of VPCI, was the Editor-in-Chief of the journal from 1983 to 1998. He continued the tradition set up by Prof. Viswanathan and took this journal to new heights. Dr. V.K. Vijayan was the Editor-in-Chief of this journal from 1999 to June 2011. Prof. S.N. Gaur was the Editor-in-Chief from July 2011 to 20/11/2012 and 01/03/2015 to 31/05/2017. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was the Editor-in-Chief from 21/11/2012 to 28/02/2015. Prof. Arunabha Ray became Editor-in-Chief from 01/06/2017 to 31/10/2017. As of November 1, 2017, Prof. Raj Kumar is the Editor-in-Chief. Many eminent scientists and clinicians have served as the editors, editorial board members, and reviewers of the journal, and all of them have contributed immensely to the growth of the journal.

Copyright and Licensing

Under Creative Commons the Authors retain ownership/ copyright of their content. The authors assign exclusive commercial re-use rights of the article to the Publisher.

All open access articles published are distributed under the terms of the CC BY-NC 4.0 license (Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial 4.0 International Public License as currently displayed at http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/legalcode) which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, for non-commercial purposes, provided the original work is properly cited.

Authors have to mandatorily submit the Open Access License Agreement Formwhen submitting the manuscript.

Articles published under this arrangement are made freely available online upon publication without subscription barriers to access. Users of such published articles are entitled to use, reproduce, disseminate, or display these articles for personal, research and educational use provided that:

  • The original authorship is properly and fully attributed.

  • The journal and publisher are attributed as the original place of publication with correct citation details given.

  • If an original work is subsequently reproduced or disseminated not in its entirety but only in part or as a derivative work, this is clearly indicated.

  • No articles are reproduced for commercial use without the prior consent of the Publisher. All the licensing requests and permissions for commercial use of the article will be managed by the Publisher. For re-use of the content for other purposes that are not covered by the CC BY-NC license, please contact journals.permissions@jaypeebrothers.com

  • Authors are also entitled to deposit the final electronic version of the article into an institutional or centrally organized subject repository upon publication. They should include a link to the published version of the article on the journal's web site, and the journal and publisher should be attributed as the original place of publication, with correct citations given.

Open Access Policy

A comprehensive outlook on open access policy that we follow:

Open access refers to the practice of making peer-reviewed scholarly research and literature freely available online to anyone interested in reading it at no cost and with limited restrictions with regards to reuse.  Open access publications are freely and permanently available online to anyone with an internet access. The journal allows unrestricted use, distribution and reproduction in any medium (which is non-commercial), provided the article is properly attributed. All the articles are published, without any technical, financial, gender limitations, in an agreed format on the journal website and deposited in archive and indexing databases as applicable to the journal. All articles are assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), thereby making it fully citable and searchable by title, author name(s) and the full text.

Why open access publishing?

Restricted access to scientific research and advancements through subscription pay wall hinders communication within the scientific community. Moreover, restricted access can also hinder the education and dissemination of scientific knowledge to the aspiring younger generations who are keen to pursue a career in science. Increased productivity and development of science can only be achieved by diffusing knowledge and providing the facilities for creating permanent repositories such as Open Access.

The use of a Creative Commons 4.0 License (CC-BY-NC 4.0) enables user/reader/peer to use the content with clear permission in a way that it can be reused and redistributed as long as the article source is appropriately given credit for non-commercial purpose.

Self-Archiving Policy for Authors

Authors are encouraged to deposit the final published PDF in their institutional repository or any suitable subject repository (according to the end-user license of the article, i.e., strictly for non-commercial re-use) immediately upon publication. The deposited version should contain the URL and link to the online published version on the publisher’s website to clearly identify it as the definitive version of record.

Abstract and Citation information

Authors can share the Abstract and “How to cite” information (e.g., Title, Author name, Publication dates) of their article anywhere at any time including social media such as Facebook, blogs and Twitter, with proper attribution to the original source (the Publisher website) or include the DOI number in the social media post that links it to the published article on the Journal website.

Submitted Version

Submitted version (SV) or the preprint version is recognized as the author version of an article before submission to a journal for peer review. The author accepts full responsibility for the article, and the content and layout are set out by the author.

Authors can post their preprint version on preprint servers of the authors’ choice, authors’ or institutional websites, preprint servers or preprint commenting platforms, intended for non-commercial use. When submitting the manuscript to the journal, authors must disclose all pertinent information regarding preprint publication, such as the DOI and licencing terms. The author must make sure that the preprint record is updated with a publication reference after it is published, including the DOI and a URL link to the journal website where the paper has been published.

Accepted Manuscript

The accepted manuscript (AM) is the peer reviewed version (not the final published version) as accepted for publication by the journal that includes modifications based on reviewers’ suggestions. This version excludes copy editing and type setting changes.

The journal does not recommend the authors to upload AM to their personal website/ institutional or other non-commercial subject-based repositories.

Published Version

Published Version (PV) is defined as the final version of the article that has been made available by the Publisher on the respective journal website by formally and exclusively putting the article either in ‘online first’ or releasing it as a part of the complete issue of that journal. This is the final, definitive, citable version of your paper, which has been copyedited, typeset, has metadata applied, and has been allocated a DOI.

Authors may share the PV with private groups within their institution or through private groups on non-commercial repositories that are signatories to the STM Voluntary principles for article sharing on Scholarly Collaboration Networks (SCN). The PV may not be uploaded or shared on commercial websites or repositories unless the website or repository has signed an agreement with the publisher permitting such uploading or sharing.
