5Preface
The MRCPsych examinations are extremely challenging, and candidates must be meticulous in their preparation if they are to stand any chance of success. Understanding this principle has been fundamental during our preparation of this book, and we have endeavoured to provide sufficient MCQ revision material for each element of the curriculum. We are confident that by using this book, readers will be well armed to face the MCQ component of the Paper 2 exam.
In order to facilitate revision, we have mapped the questions in the first four chapters to the curriculum topics. The fifth chapter is intentionally unstructured, and has been included to provide a mock exam representative of the MCQ component of Paper 2, which readers can use to practise under exam conditions. All questions are based on the curriculum and thorough answers have been provided to explain the rationale behind each correct answer option.
The burden of editorship has been wisely spread to harness varied expertise. In psychiatry, innovation in practice tends to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary, and much of our knowledge remains to be translated into practical innovations in patient care. It is our intention that this book will help psychiatry trainees not only to pass the MRCPsych Paper 2 examination, but also to improve their patient care. We believe that the book will assist trainees, trainers, educational and clinical supervisors, College tutors, Directors of Medical Education, SAS tutors and Training Programme Directors in preparation for the MRCPsych examinations.
