5Preface
Renal medicine is an area that tends to cause uncertainty, if not actual fear, in the minds of many undergraduates (and postgraduates, for that matter). It is true that areas such as glomerular disease, acid-base balance, and electrolyte disorders are complex, and the temptation is to leave them to the specialists. On the other hand, acute kidney injury is a common and often preventable occurrence amongst hospital inpatients, and the growing burden, both clinical and economic, of chronic kidney disease is an issue for primary and secondary care alike.
Despite the importance of renal medicine, we often struggle when asked by our students for suggestions for further reading. The standard general medical text books often do not, in our view, offer clear explanations of some of the more complex areas, and the large multi-volume texts are not really suitable for the non-specialist. With Pocket Tutor Renal Medicine we have attempted to fill the gap by providing information at the level that we would expect a final year student or newly qualified doctor to acquire. The book should also be suitable for other members of the multi-disciplinary team involved in the care of renal patients.
