5Preface
Urinary stents are a daily tool for urologists all over the world, although many practitioners will only be familiar with the double-J stent. Most will use the stent supplied by their theater manager. They will be unaware of the stent's design, material and coating, to name but a few of the components which together form the focus of current research, and of which there is a significant amount in this field. In stent development, cardiology leads the way, now involving nanotechnologies and immunomodulatory approaches. But there are essential differences between developing a stent for a blood based, as opposed to a urinary, environment.
In 15 years of clinical research we have seen many stents introduced; some have been successful while others failed to gain acceptance in clinical practice. All of them provided valuable insights into stent physiology and stent pathology, however. The double-J stent (and with it the wider implementation of stenting in urology) is still only 40 years old. New stents and stent materials are continuously being tested and marketed. They offer exciting possibilities not just in terms of helping with conventional treatments, but also by avoiding the need for more invasive ones.
Handbook of Urinary Stents: Basic Science and Clinical Applications is the first book to present a concise overview of contemporary research and the clinical application of urinary stents, which have been used in various forms and shapes in the urethra, prostate and ureter; all of these organs form part of the urinary system, but they have different shapes and pathophysiology requiring different stent adaptations.
We hope that Handbook of Urinary Stents: Basic Science and Clinical Applications provides a valuable tool for everybody with an interest in stents, from researchers to the clinical urologists who use stents every day to improve the lives of their patients.
