fm5Preface
All doctors, regardless of specialty, will encounter patients with skin disease. This book provides a concise guide to the investigation, diagnosis and management of common skin diseases.
The first four chapters give an understanding of the structure and function of the skin and the processes required to make a dermatological diagnosis. Subsequent chapters are arranged by disease type and summarise the clinical features and management options for each diagnosis, alongside diagrams and photographs to aid understanding. Finally, there are chapters covering dermatological emergencies and the principles of dermatological surgery.
We hope that this book will benefit both students and trainee doctors, by acting as a quick reference to use in the clinic and in preparation for exams.

A huge thank you to our dermatology trainees, particularly Bryan Macdonald and Karolina Gholam, and to my colleagues at the St John's Institute of Dermatology. Thanks to Tanya Henshaw for her contribution to the nursing chapter and also to Rhonda Meys. Thanks to Gary Mulcahy for the medical photography, and a special thanks to Anthony du Vivier, a mentor and friend who is responsible for making this book happen. Finally, thanks to my husband Neil, who now knows more dermatology than he ever thought possible.
