5Preface
Despite the near simultaneous, worldwide availability of published research data, the need for up- to-date review publications is stronger than ever. Professionals can no longer cope, even within the limits of their own specialist field, with the tidal wave of information and recommendations available to them on the internet. Quite apart from contemporary research data, guidelines (which once were considered to retain their influence for prolonged periods) are now updated at increasingly short intervals, and there are often variations in the recommendations from different authorities.
In this environment it is extremely helpful for the professional to have access to considered reflections from experts, and this has been our primary aim in producing this book. We have been very fortunate in assembling recognised experts, with the objective of providing focussed, reliable and relevant summaries of the literature, and to present them in digestible format.
The topics chosen are all highly relevant to the practising clinician and all of the authors are recognised authorities in their respective fields.
