5Preface
The role of acting as editor in chief for the Recent Advances in Paediatrics series is an extremely enjoyable one. I am delighted be able to commission articles from leading experts in their fields on topics that interest those who care about the welfare of children. The topics are deliberately wide ranging and the authors have striven to highlight and comment on new areas in paediatrics. They have each written their chapter in a manner that makes those new developments in the field accessible and interesting to the general paediatric reader. The range of topics run from the establishment of the WHO course, Emergency Triage and Treatment (ETAT), and how it was set up in Africa, to rehabilitation of head injury, sports medicine in childhood, developments in paediatric intensive care, how the intranasal route may be the best mode for giving drugs in specific circumstances, the debate about immunising for RSV and more. Important practical aspects are also highlighted in the chapters, meaning that there are many learning points that can be used to improve the care of paediatric patients. I hope that you enjoy reading the contents of this volume as much as I have.
