The day-to-day job of a junior doctor in orthopaedics and trauma can be daunting. During medical school, students rarely receive extensive teaching on trauma and orthopaedics; early placements in the orthopaedics department can therefore cause anxiety due to the range of conditions that may be encountered. Not knowing what will come in next when on call, the volume of cases in a busy fracture clinic and learning to perform procedures and operations all represent a significant challenge. Foundation and other doctors in their first years of practice may find their first surgical attachments are in orthopaedics, while surgical trainees in their later years should all expect to spend some time exposed to trauma. As they progress to their later years of specialist training, the questioning in the morning trauma meeting will inevitably fall to them with greater frequency.
Key Clinical Topics in Orthopaedic Trauma has been written to bridge the gap between qualification as a doctor and later years of orthopaedic specialty training. The 102 topics have been chosen on the basis of their clinical importance and the frequency with which they will be encountered in practice. By concentrating on the core knowledge required in these topics, the book provides a firm foundation and practical reference not just for junior doctors in the orthopaedic department and fracture clinic but also for trainee surgeons progressing through the middle years of their specialty training. Furthermore, the highly accessible writing style makes Key Clinical Topics in Orthopaedic Trauma ideal as a revision tool for the trauma element of the FRCS Tr&Orth (section 2) examination. Even though the book is written primarily for junior doctors and surgical trainees, we hope it will provide a helpful resource for those medical students and nurses seeking an overview of the principles of orthopaedic trauma in practice.
Imaging is necessarily a core tool in orthopaedic diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. Accordingly, numerous radiological images are included alongside clinical photographs to illustrate the appearance of topics discussed in the text. We also include diagrams to clarify anatomical structures and fracture classification systems. Finally, tables help to compare and summarise information while Further reading sections at the end of each topic point the reader towards useful sources of more detailed information.
We hope you will find Key Clinical Topics in Orthopaedic Trauma an invaluable guide to the subject, one which provides just the right amount of information on each condition or injury to enable readers to understand core principles and apply them in the everyday care of their patients.
