5Preface
Psychopharmacology is a rapidly evolving science. Clinically pharmacological agents have helped many a suffering patients. The decade of the brain, the new knowledge in molecular biology and genetics have given new vistas for the development of this field. These rapid developments have increased the scope of psychopharmacology in understanding mental illness and manufacture medications which precisely improve the particular psychopathology. Their potentials have embraced the spectrum of personality disorder to the memory disorders.
A psychopharmacologist should be aware of the functions of the brain, understands the biological basis of various mental disorders, study the pharmacology of various psychoactive agents, and finally familiarizes himself with the treatment of these disorders.
With this broad scope, the book is written in four parts. The first part includes nerve transduction, dopaminergic serotonergic and norepinephrinergic system and pharmacokinetics. The second part deals with the pharmacology of various drugs. The third part explores the psychobiology of various mental disorders and the last part provides detailed information on the treatment of various mental disorders. Treatment of special populations are also included in the last part.
I am indebted to all the contributors and many others who helped me to put the material to the computer, assisted me in finding references and read the manuscript. My secretary Marylou Galano deserves special credit for her assistance.
