Since the Eighth Edition of Clinical Pathology and Clinical Bacteriology, major advances have taken place in both the understanding and the diagnosis of disease process. Tremendous explosions in knowledge have occurred in all the realms of laboratory medicine. Consequently, the ninth edition of this book is intended to update the new knowledge.
The book is divided into two parts: (1) Clinical Pathology, and (2) Clinical Bacteriology. To accomplish this goal, many sections have been totally rewritten and expanded. Urine Analysis, Clinical Chemistry, and Clinical Haematology are rewritten. Thirty-two coloured microphotographs have been added.
New chapters such as Diagnostic Cytology and The Endocrine System are added by courtesy of Professor (Dr) Harsh Mohan, Professor and Head, Department of Pathology, Govt. Medical College, Chandigarh.
Generous assistance provided by Dr (Mrs) K Uma Chaturvedi, Department of Pathology, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi is duly acknowledged.
It is hoped that the ninth edition would prove to be useful and handy to all the readers.

6Preface to the First Edition
Although there are many authoritative and exhaustive text books on Clinical Pathology, yet there is dearth of a handy book on the subject within the reach of everybody. The aims and objectives of this concise book is primarily intended to cater to the needs of our present day under graduate, postgraduate students in medical colleges and the general practitioners.
With the advancement of knowledge in Pathology most of the books on Clinical Pathology are voluminous and very expensive. The students experience great difficulty and waste considerable time in fishing out the relevant matter from the laboratory manuals. The intention in writing this concise and comprehensive book is to state briefly the principles and objectives of the techniques and procedures commonly employed, along with interpretations.
It is hoped that the presentation of this book will help the undergraduate and postgraduate students to equip themselves with the knowledge of Clinical Pathology. Suggestions and criticisms will be most welcome through the Publisher.
