4Preface
Almost every senior teacher in clinical medicine has felt the apprehension that the clinical medicine might become an extinct art, in these days of rapid technological advances. Clinical medicine especially in relation to children does not require any investment but only an art of communication with the patient and intellectual, comprehensive and gentle observational skills. There are few books available on clinical methods in paediatrics. But we feel a book on paediatric clinical methods should be more comprehensive, informative and practically oriented to cater to the needs of undergraduates, postgraduates in Paediatrics as well as to practising paediatricians. In this book we have tried to meet these needs. The book has been presented in two section. Section I—Paediatric History Taking and Section II—Symptomatology. Each volume has been divided into several chapters. A few chapters included in this book are entirely new concepts which are not usually found in the conventional books on clinical methods. Though the book is little exhaustive with information it is unavoidable when the purpose has to be fulfilled. A few repetitions found in these volumes, we feel, are worthwhile to emphasise the message.
We are confident that this book will serve the needs of undergraduate especially at a time when the Medical Council of India has made Paediatrics as a major examination subject. Thus, the publication of the book is not only timely but also out of necessity.
It is hoped that this book will serve as an useful companion for all those caring for children. We well come constructive critisism from our readers.
