To My Sweet Lord the juggernaut, the foremost psychotherapist, who in an amazing way helped me at every step—Waking me, taking me, leading me, guiding me, providing me, protecting me, saving me and blessing me; without whose Grace this work could not have happened.

7Preface
One of my junior colleagues asked “what made you write the book, (in spite of) being a busy medical practitioner?” If you take a moment to think about it the reasons are obvious: Emotions are a part of daily life for all of us. Everyone of us needs to have ways and means to deal with emotional surges in an optimal way. There is an absolute need for psychophylaxis; Psychophylaxis or mental hygiene is prophylaxis in mental health, that is, primary prevention against mental illness or in other words primary psychiatric immunization. Like any immunization, it is to be implemented before we are affected by that illness. It is for all, for population as a whole. But that is deficient in our health care today. Yet, it is there. Components of psychophylaxis are everywhere around us! Yoga (yogic) and Vedantha sciences, especially Patanjali's Raja Yoga, and Bhagavad Gita are excellent in psychophylaxis. Adaptations and applications from Raja yoga are practiced widely in the West, but not yet a part of the mainstream medical practice. During years of practise as Family Physician, many a times I have felt the need to impart this knowledge for the benefit of people at large, starting with patients and their families. From what is available in plenty in literature—ancient and modern, I have tried to compile and adapt it for the purpose of psychophylaxis. By following this you will get a boost to the state of mental health, prevent emotional stress, achieve immunity against mental illnesses and become a better model of yourself.
The motto of my life, even from childhood, infused by my mother, has been: ‘the purpose of this life is to be of help to others’. This is my attempt to make available psychophylaxis, which 8I have tried to write down like a doctor's medical advice. Written by a lay person to psychology, it gives a fresh look into the subject. Presented in everyday language by a compassionate family doctor who is not an expert in psychology or psychiatry it is patient-friendly. The terminology may not be accurate in scientific terms. Methodology may be revolutionary and alien to professional mainstream. But the contents are broadly on the lines of psychological principles. The idea for this book has been with me for years. It has taken so long for it to come out, because of my being busy bound to worldly and family matters. With a genuine desire and commitment to be of service in whatever little way to my fellow humans, I have been able to bring out this book in spite of total worldly preoccupations.
Note In the text use of words—man, he and so on are not gender specific; nor male chauvinistic.
I thank Mrs Latha Nagaraj who encouraged me when I was struggling to complete this work and for helping me to bring it to the publishing stage. Above all I thank God for giving me the wisdom, opportunity and strength to serve the people in His domain in this small way.

9Before You Begin
This is not a novel. It may not be light reading. It concerns your life, your prosperity, wellness and your happiness. It is a guide for you to become a better model of you.
First you read it through to know what is in it. Second time you read it to pick out what is in it for you. Third time you read it, you study the parts that you have picked. From then on you refer to it as a companion pocket guide to practice psychophylaxis or mental hygiene to conquer emotional stress and achieve immunity against mental illness.
The subject dealt within this handbook is such that it looks difficult at the very outset. The scientific sections of Neurosciences and Psychosciences contain these long names, hard to pronounce and not readily understood. The chapters in the scientific sections may be of more of interest to professionals. As a general reader you don't have to read it. If you find it hard and difficult to understand, you can skip these chapters and proceed. On top of these difficulties are those strange Samskrit language words adding to the confusion. You can ignore these words and proceed. But keep reading. You will understand. It will all make sense. Each chapter is independent in its own way. There are overlappings and repetitions.
The sections: Introduction and Definitions, Disasters of Disorderly life, Children and Psychophylaxis, and so on, are general chapters, not hard to read. The chapters of Practicing Preliminaries, and so on, and the section: Psychophylaxis for Everyday Practice are interesting for one and all; to follow and benefit from their practice.10
My main goal is to make it easy for people to practice psychophylaxis and benefit by conquering emotional stress and achieving immunity against mental illness for themselves and for their families. This being my first attempt I might not have succeeded in my goal. I urge the readers of this book and practitioners of psychophylaxis, humbly and with all sincerity, to give criticisms, suggestions and comments for the future benefit of one and all.
