5Preface to the Eleventh Edition
No field of science has seen vast expansion and exploration techniques as has been encountered in the field of Clinical Biochemistry. Due to the advancement of various technicalities, including computerisation, this branch has come up in a big way to give benefits to the ailing population. Thus it becomes a responsible factor for a writer of any book to update the matters accordingly.
Immunology has taken its place in a very big way in all medical teaching institutions for its vast applicative utilities. I, with that in mind, have tried my best to put a big Chapter on Immunology nearly 20 pages: The definition of immunology, antigen-antibody reaction and the latest technology of investigating the immunological material have found their right place in an absorbing manner. Also Chapters on Cancer and Xenobiotics are new additions.
Chapters on Biophysics, Enzymes and Biological Oxidations have been thorougly revised. All the metabolic processes of Carbohydrates, Fats, Proteins, Nucleic Acid have seen the changed models. Protein Biosynthesis and Hormones all are in the challenging front for which necessary alterations became important.
In this effort, I thank the timely advices of Prof B Misra and good will of my friends and faternity including Dear ‘Sumit’ to bring out this edition in its excellence.
Sh. Jitendar P Vij, Chairman and Managing Director, Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi deserves special praise for his patience.

6Preface to the First Edition
Biochemistry currently occupies an eminent position particularly among medical subjects. However, there are few Indian texts in the market at present which enable students to acquire a working knowledge of the subject.
Having been connected with the teaching profession for the past few years, I am well acquainted with the difficulties encountered by students while trying to master the subject.
The present book is the result of my humble attempt to overcome these handicaps and present to students the subject in a simple and easy assimilable form.
Attempts have been made to illustrate the subject matter with diagrams and chemical formulae wherever necessary.
Special thanks to my publisher Mr Jitendar P Vij, without whose help this book could not have seen the light of the day.
