Foreword
I have great pleasure in writing this Foreword to the book on “Diagnostic Dilemmas and Decision Making in Pediatrics and Neonatology” written by Dr. M. Nagaraj Rao, Former Professor and Chair, Department of Pediatrics, Osmania Medical College and Consultant Neonatologist, Niloufer Hospital, Hyderabad and presently Consultant Pediatrician, Apollo DRDO, Hyderabad. Dr. Nagaraj Rao has been assisted by the co-author Dr. G.R. Prasad, Consultant Pediatric Surgeon, in covering the problems relating to Pediatric Surgery.
Dr. Nagaraj Rao has an extensive experience in Pediatrics and Neonatology, both as a Clinician and as a Teacher for a period of nearly four decades. He has been a very popular teacher and enthralled several generations of students with his mastery over the subject and his analytical approach to the clinical problems. These attributes are amply borne out by the style of his writing. Departing from the traditional System Based Approach, he has adopted the Problem Based Approach, a concept which is now accepted world-wide as the preferred method of Teaching/Learning in Medical Education. The chapters are arranged sequentially starting with Neonatology and covering various problems in Pediatrics. The title of each chapter indicates the problem dealt with and the text is profusely illustrated with suitable figures/photographs and appropriate algorithms. This is bound to enhance the problem solving skills of the readers. The references cited for further reading will particularly benefit the postgraduate trainees pursuing further study.
I am confident that this book will be of great benefit both for the students and practitioners alike and will form an essential title for the Medical Libraries.

9Preface
Diagnostic Dilemmas and Decision Making in Pediatrics and Neonatology is the culmination of forty years of collection of interesting problematic cases which are unusual. All of them are fully worked up and well illustrated. It has been our long cherished desire to collect all of them and compile them into a textbook. We are confident that it will be very useful for the pediatric teachers, postgraduate medical students and undergraduates. We have also included a few algorithms in a simple style.
We are grateful to Dr. Arun Nair of Muscat, Omen who has contributed a very nice case on “Congestive Failure in a Neonate due to A.V Malformation in the Brain”. Dr. G. Lakshmi and Dr. M. Dayanand have contributed the case “Jaundice in a baby of 2 years which started on day 8 of life”.
Dr. G. Raghavendra Prasad, well known and dynamic Pediatric Surgeon has contributed the entire section of the pediatric surgery. His selection of common and problematic cases with appropriate illustration are very instructive and educative.
We do earnestly hope that the book will be very informative and instructive and will be found available in all the medical college libraries and teaching institutions in India and with the majority of postgraduate students.
We are grateful to M/s. Seetha for the secretarial help and Naresh of S.V. Color Lab, Saidabad, Hyderabad for the photographic work.
We are extremely fortunate to get a review and a nice foreword from Prof. G. Sham Sunder, top academician, administrator and Vice Chancellor of NTR Medical University, Andhra Pradesh.
We are thankful to Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers Pvt Ltd., New Delhi for coming forward to publish the book in a grand shape especially to Mr. Jitendar P Vij, Chairman and Managing Director, for his encouragement and advice.
