5Preface
Midwifery is an older terminology used, around 3–4 decades ago, for the present terminology of obstetrics. A midwife is a person, who has completed the course in midwifery and has acquired the qualification to practice midwifery. It is the duty of a midwife to give independent care and advice to women during labour, pregnancy and postpartum period. A midwife plays an important role in counselling and education which involves antenatal education and preparation for parenthood and extends to certain areas of gynecology, family planning and child care. Obstetrics is a newer terminology which means a midwife rendering aid to parturient.
This book intends to provide a thorough knowledge right from the beginning of the career as a midwife. It describes in a lucid way the terminology used in midwifery. Besides enlisting the duties and role of midwife in general it also equips them with various actions and responsibilities to be put into practice in different stages of pre and post period of pregnancy and child care. This book will be of great help to all those who wants to get into the field of midwifery. It covers Historical Perspectives of Midwifery Terminology, Antenatal Care for Normal Pregnancy, Normal Labour, Abnormal Labour and Preterm Labour, Third Stage of Labour, Obstetrics Emergency and more.
I hope the book will suffice the needs of readers and will bring a good response. All care has been taken to avoid errors to greater extent. Your valuable comments will further help me in removing the slips. All suggestions are cordially welcome.
