5Preface
Ultrasound is completely operator dependant and that is what differentiates a good from an average ultrasonologist. Wrong interpretations of echoes that one sees on the screen can change the diagnosis and hence the management as well. Especially if you are scanning a fetus, be patient and methodical to what all one has to see. Never be in a rush to announce the diagnosis of something abnormal. Try and learn and see more and more of normal, however, monotonous it might be. One day when you do not appreciate the abnormality but you know this is not normal that is the day when the training of your eyes to see normal is going to be helpful.
It is a reference manual for the technique, recognition of normal anatomy and the possible differential diagnosis and physiological changes in anything abnormal. This book is going to provide everyday practical guidance in the laboratory for those who are learning on the job. The potential risks of ultrasound, if any, need to be weighed against the benefits, particularly in obstetrics, where ultrasound provides so much more information.
This basic manual is a step for making ultrasound as an easier modality of choice rather than fearing the technique.
