Until a couple of decades ago, we were not quite well equipped with handling of the life-threatening medical emergencies in infants and children both from the point of view of knowledge and availability of infrastructure. Remarked New England Journal of Medicine way back in 1984, “What a pity that in tackling pediatric emergencies, we still bank on the approaches followed in adults!”
Of course, over the years the scenario has considerably changed in the advanced countries. The positive developments in India and other developing countries have, however, lagged behind. Yet, refreshing developments with urge on the part of the young pediatricians for knowledge and its applicability in clinical practice are beginning to show up.
The need for a volume that puts in perspective the advances made in the recent past and provides state-of-the-art information on life-threatening emergencies cannot, therefore, be overemphasized.
The 14th annual volume of the noted international series, Recent Advances in Pediatrics, first launched in 1991 and now concurrently in its 14th annual volume and 13th Special Volumes (RAP—14 and RAP Special Vol 13: Pediatric Endocrinology, respectively), aims at covering topical issues in pediatric critical care. The 34 state-of-the-art chapters contributed by as many as 44 experts drawn within India and abroad, attempt to review the depth and breadth of knowledge in the field of pediatrics with special reference to its applicability in the Indian subcontinent.
Each and every chapter is remarkable by its excellence, providing a stimulating and, not infrequently, even provocative, mature and informed update. Such an approach is understandably befitting when the goal is not only to inform but also to motivate discussion, interaction, research and innovation.
In keeping with the professed policy of the series, multidisciplinary strategy with an eye on future continues to occupy pride of place in this volume too.
We wish to record our indebtedness to our distinguished contributors for reposing confidence in our editorship. Nevertheless, we offer our apology to some authors whose contributions could not be included in this volume for reasons beyond our control.
Our thanks are also due to the Advisory Editorial Board for providing inputs and advice in various editorial matters.
Our daughter, Novy, a 3rd year MBBS student, and son, Manu, a 2nd year student of Bachelor of Engineering, were gracious enough to volunteer all sorts of assistance in taking the project to its logical conclusion.
Finally, our gratitudes are due to Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd and their dedicated staff for the skillful production qualities of the volume.
