5Preface
History is witness to the fact that whenever there has been a new development or a discovery, it has met with skepticism and doubt. However with the passage of time those discoveries that stood the test of time come to be respected and appreciated. 3D ultrasound has evolved over the past few years to finally command the respect and admiration that it deserves. It is a valuable adjunct to 2D ultrasound scanning which we are so used to. The newer development of 4D ultrasound has been possible due to the fast processing computers that are now available. We feel that in an evolving environment, it has still miles to go. Nevertheless it had become imperative to take a hard look at this development in the field of ultrasound and weigh it on its merits. The possibilities have been endless and we have used 3D ultrasound in many areas including abdomen, obstetrics, gynecology, small parts, etc. It has given us excellent results and we have tried to compile them in this book.
We seriously believe that we have just skimmed the surface of this wonderful technology and hope that this book serves as an inspiration and guide for our colleagues and fellow sonologists.

6Acknowledgements
This work would not have been possible without the help of Vishal Mittal, my Technical Man Friday. My office staff Thakur Dass Sharma, DS Rawat, A Chandra, Ruffina Xavier have patiently borne with me through this period of “overwork”. Dr. Girish Pandit and Dr Jyotika Gulati, my colleagues at the laboratory, have consistently smiled through the writing of this book and helped me to smile as well. And above all, my sons, Kabeer and Arjun who have got their furniture and computer back after a long time.
Jitendar P Vij of Jaypee Medical Publishers has always insisted that I put my fingers to the keyboard and never lets me travel back from any conference without badgering me about putting a book together, thanks so much.
A very special thanks to Nirvikar Dahiya for his constant inspiration.
A special acknowledgement to two great teachers, Sneh Bhargava and Hans Henrik Holm – I owe them a lot of what I practice.
More than acknowledgement, fond appreciation, to my mother Sarla Khurana, for mothering me.

Every endeavour involves a multitude of factors, events and people. Finally when the mixture is right the process reaches a logical conclusion. I have been indebted to a large number of people in this attempt of mine, people who have shaped my thinking and my career, people who have stood by me when the chips were down and people who advised me freely whenever I asked. I take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude and thanks to all these wonderful people. Dr Barry Goldberg and Dr Alfred Kratochwil for inspiring me to take to ultrasound with my deepest commitment. Dr G Bakthavathsalam, for immense support and encouragement at my place of work. Dr Ravi Hoisala, my Professor, at my institute of post graduation in radiology, and Dr Shivanna Shetty, both are educators beyond compare. Dr BS Ramamurthy and Dr S Suresh for being mentors and seniors who have always been excellent guides. Dr Ashok Khurana, a cherished friend and colleague, and motivator.
I also take this opportunity to thank my colleagues, Dr Vijay and Dr Sudha, who have taken a lot of responsibility at work, so that I could concentrate on this work. Dr Sangeetha and Dr Sachit Verma, residents in radiology who have given help when asked. I thank my staff at the department of ultrasound, KG Hospital, for being the finest supporting staff I could have wished for. I thank Mr JP Vij for putting up with our delays and encouraging us all the way. Last but never the least, my wife, Dr Neha Dahiya, an excellent pathologist and the reason why we were able to follow up a lot of our patients, right upto the final diagnosis. Thank you.
