5Acknowledgements
This book has been compiled as a handy volume from materials collected from various sources. I wish to express my sincere thanks for all those sources and I specially owe much to the volume “Preventive and Social Medicine” by K Park.
My sincere thanks goes to Ms R Priyadarshini, Mr S Elayaraja, Mr Abdul Wahab, Mr N Saravanan and Mr A Raja Narayanan for their secretarial assistance in bringing out this volume. I also like to express my gratitude to Mr M Sankara Pandian for his help in the compilation of the topic ‘basic statistics in health care’.
6Preface
This book is an attempt to bring out a smaller volume on public health specially to cater to the needs of students and public health personnel like sanitary inspectors, nurses and doctors. It may be useful to others as well, as a guide to refer to. My nineteen years of teaching of public health has made me quite aware of the need for such a book.
I have used the usual format adopted by textbooks of Social and Preventive Medicine. The language used will be easy to understand and enhance the clarity of the principles and concepts. Only the minimum needed to understand the subject has been incorporated in this book.
The contents have been organized into 9 chapters. Chapter 1 discusses strategies for providing health care, concepts in preventing diseases etc. Chapter 2 deals with epidemiology of communicable diseases. Chapter 3 deals with non-communicable diseases. Demography, family planning and maternal and child health are discussed in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 deals with nutrition and Chapter 6 describes school health service and principles of health education. Chapter 7 deals with occupational health. Health systems and health care programmes in India are dealt with in Chapter 8. Chapter 9 covers topics like basic statistics in health care, disinfection procedures, vector control methods, immunization schedule, etc.
