6Preface
The past decade has witnessed a very significant expansion of dental education in our country and there has been an increase in the number of dental colleges. The Dental Council of India has prescribed a specific syllabus of physiology, which enables the students to have a fundamental concept of the human body. It is rather unfortunate that the dental students have no specific textbook, which restricts itself to their requirements. Consequently, they have to refer back to the detailed textbooks of Medical Physiology and quite often find it difficult and confusing to gather the basic knowledge expected of them.
This Textbook of Physiology for Dental Students is a sincere attempt to cater to their exclusive needs in keeping with the requirements of the Dental Council of India. An attempt has been made to cover the required syllabus, the language is simple and unnecessary details have been avoided.
Some of our experienced colleagues have suggested the incorporation of additional information in the book and due respect has been given to their suggestions by expanding the spectrum of information.
This revised fifth edition of the textbook incorporates additional information and many self-explanatory diagrams and flow charts to enable the students to have a better concept of the subject. Moreover, recent developments which are taking place in many areas of medical physiology have also been included in the revised edition.
There are various other paramedical courses, where the students require a basic knowledge of physiology. The authors are confident that this book will also cater to their needs.
