7Preface
I was fortunate to be involved in organising many MD, DNB and DCH examinations. Since my postgraduate training in Chennai and later when I was in Kolkata, I have seen many examinations and many examiners closely. I have realised that the examiners expect a well organised presentation. Most of the time the correct diagnosis is immaterial. The approach to the case, different emergency situations and problems are what matters. The purpose of this book is to offer a simple approach to cases and problems. This book at its best can act as a companion to the standard textbooks.
I am immensely indebted to my teachers and colleagues of Kanchi Kamakoti CHILDS Trust Hospital, Chennai for offering me great insight to pediatrics. I humbly offer my sincere gratitude to Dr R Shanmugasundaram, Dr BR Nammalwar, Dr Sarala Rajajee, Dr VS Sankaranarayanan, Dr M Vijayakumar, Dr A Balachandran, Dr G Kumaresan, Dr Suchitra Ranjit, Dr Janani Shankar and the list is never ending.
Prof. Maya Mukhopadhyay, Prof. Apurba Ghosh and Prof. Ritabrata Kundu of Institute of Child Health, Kolkata has been my teacher, support and ever helpful. I have learned a lot from my interactions with Prof. AK Dutta, HOD Pediatrics, Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi. I must acknowledge the great inspiration that I always get from Dr Tapan Kr Ghosh.
Many facets of this book have evolved during interactions with my friends Dr Amitava Chattopadhyay, Dr Sankar Chatterjee, Dr Supratik Sengupta, Dr Biswajit Bandopadhyay and Dr Jayanta Bandopadhyay.
Jaypee Brothers have supported and encouraged me and prepared the book in quickest possible time. I express my sincere thanks to Sh Jitendar P Vij, Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Tarun Duneja and the staff of the Kolkata branch specially Mr Sandeep Gupta, Mr Sabyasachi Hazra, Mr Indrajit Upadhaya.8
My parents are always supportive and motivating. My wife Sudarsana and son Sayondeep have been very encouraging and silently witnessed the hours and turmoil that I went through.
