5Acknowledgments
The inspiration of the book came during my tenure at LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, where I was doing research work under Dr TP Das under the AIOS research fellowship programme. At the onset, I would like to thank Dr TP Das, for providing me with the inspiration of the book.
Next, I would like to thank Shri Jitendar P Vij, Chairman and Managing Director of Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd. for his confidence in my humble efforts and publishing my book.
Critical to the success of this publication are the figures and tables reprinted with permission from Elsevier from their publications which are mentioned under the appropriate figures and tables. I sincerely thank them for their support.
I would especially like to thank Mrs Jamie Nguyen of Ocular Instruments, Bellevue, USA for providing me with the images and specifications of their contact laser lenses for reprint.
I would also like to thank my colleagues at SN Pandit Hospital for their continued encouragement.
Finally I would like to thank my family for all the patience and support they have given me. I would specially like to thank my wife Sujaya for all the diagrams she had so carefully drawn.
6Preface
The advent of YAG laser in ophthalmology has given the surgeon a greater therapeutic choice. This is one of the avenues of treatments which the younger generation of ophthalmologists should explore. In my book Clinical Applications: Ya g Laser (Ophthalmology), I have tried to simplify the different YAG Laser procedures in a systematic way particularly for the beginners entering into the field of Laser Surgery.
After giving a brief history of the development of laser, I have gone onto the various physical principles of YAG laser. The rest of the book is devoted to the various YAG laser procedures for different indications based on my clinical experience. I would also like to draw the attention of the young surgeon to the last chapter which deals with the various hazards of YAG laser and their safety measures. A special chapter is also devoted to the various contact YAG laser lenses.
I hope that my humble efforts should prove successful in helping the beginner in YAG laser. I have tried to make the matter as comprehensive as possible. However, certain inaccuracies may arise for which I apologise sincerely. Any suggestions and comments on the book would be greatly appreciated.
