7Preface to the Third Edition
It is a matter of great pride and privilege to present to esteemed readers the third edition of “Review of Surgery” spread over in 81 chapters.
The book is very exhaustive yet simple and lucid. New MCQs have been incorporated but the 5 practice papers have been left untouched. More stress has been put on MCQs that have clinical significance. In its present form the book will be immensely helpful for students preparing for postgraduate entrance examination as well as in self evaluation.
Though we have tried to give most appropriate answers, inaccuracies might have occurred due to oversight, in which case, readers may consult Bailey and Love's Short Practice of Surgery, 24th edition.
All suggestions for improvement are cordially welcome.

8Preface to the First Edition
In medical curriculum, surgery stands only next to medicine. At undergraduate level more emphasis is laid on surgical principles rather than the intricate surgical skills. Most standard textbooks on surgery are vivid about these surgical principles.
Multiple Choice Questions now form the standard format for assessment of candidates in most competitive examinations. Time is not far off when they will be introduced in undergraduate medical examinations. Hence students need to be oriented about MCQs from beginning of their medical career. Properly formulated MCQs cover all aspects of a topic from aetiology to prognosis and can be useful in viva voce as well as clinical examinations.
To meet this objective we have tried honestly to formulate suitable MCQs for undergraduates. Students can find answers to them in any standard textbook of surgery but Bailey and Love, Short Practice of Surgery being wide in circulation, page references have been made of this book. Five practice papers have been incorporated which are either questions asked in various postgraduate entrance examinations or based on existing textbooks of surgery. Students will gain confidence once they proceed with them and will have a chance to test their comprehension on the subject.
The book is exhaustive yet concrete and simple. Though we have tried sincerely to provide the most appropriate answers, there may be more than one correct answer to a question and there might have been omissions due to oversight in which case students are advised to refer the page noted against each question.
Suggestions for improvement are appreciated.
