5Foreword
I believe that the greatest miracle of creation is the birth of a newborn baby. It remains to be an amazing entity by itself affecting every living creature that has been created on this planet of earth. In these incredible phenomena of human creation the care of this newborn baby takes the highest priority in the human caring aspect. While we try to understand the beauty of creation and magnanimity of the creator, the greatest responsibility of caring for the newborn baby lies in our hands, and nurses as one of the most important health care professionals are in the best strategic position to respond to this call.
The contents of this book strongly focused on selected aspects of the biological needs of the normal, the sick and the high-risk infants and is easy to follow. Nurses Guide to Neonatal Procedures is a valuable nursing tool mainly designed to all the neonatal and pediatric nurses and the nursing students in India. The author's main emphasis is on, the estimation of the gestational age of the newborn infants, Temperature monitoring, Intravenous Therapy, Tube Feeding, Oxygen Administration, Newborn Resuscitation, and care of babies with Respiratory distress, Hypoglycemia, Apnea, Umbilical catheters and Pneumothorax.

7Foreword
I am honoured to write a foreword for the 1st edition of this extremely valuable text, which is going to be very useful guide for nursing students and personnel, in care of the newborn infant. The contents of this book is a wonderful guide for its broadened scope of clinical utility in NICU.
I appreciate the author for understanding the need of a guide for “Neonatal Procedures” for Indian setup. It is really going to be a very useful tool for nurses and students in India, where care of the Newborn Infants is a fast-developing branch in nursing.
This is the first issue of Nurses Guide to Neonatal Procedures ever devoted to Neonatal Intensive Care, relatively a new superspeciality. As such, NICU is really a speciality area of critical care medicine.
Infants are our most precious national resource and let this book be devoted to their preservation. It is hoped that this book will be useful and contribute to the improved care of neonates in our country, The author is to be congratulated on her success once again in advancing our knowledge in this discipline.

9Preface
In recent past, in India Neonatal Nursing is a fast-developing branch in nursing. Since there is no guide available for neonatal procedures for Indian setup I felt the need of a guide available for nurses and students who are providing neonatal care. This book is an outcome of my academic and professional experience in the nursing field especially in neonatal nursing.
The highlight of this book is the inclusion of the orientation package, which can be used as a checklist for any fresh nursing graduates not exposed to neonatal experience.
I believe this would be a useful guide for nursing personnel taking up training in neonatal nursing care as their superspeciality. The head nurses of NICU can use this guide as a training module to train their nurses within the units.
I welcome suggestions and from the readers and nurses of this book to make the further edition more informative and updated.
I thank Almighty God for giving me wisdom and health to write this book. Also I thank my wonderful parents, husband and daughter for their moral encouragement. My special thanks to Dr Anantha Kumari Rajan, Prof. and HOD, CMCH, Vellore and to Dr Jaison Jacob, Director, St. Mary's Hospital, Arni, for writing foreword. Finally I express my sincere thanks for M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (Pvt) Ltd. New Delhi, for publishing this book.
