Neonatology is a distinctive, unique and complex branch of the medicine. This is because of the extrauterine, anatomical and physiological adaptation of the newborn. The neonatal period, i.e. first four weeks of the life contributes to the fifty percent of the infant mortality rate. This explain the importance and challenging feature of the neonatology. The range of physiological and biochemical parameters are limited, the management of the sick neonate requires early diagnosis and prompt treatment.
The main purpose of this book is to provide the comprehensive information for the management of acute medical and surgical problems of the neonate. An every attempt has been made to enable the residents and readers to arrive at a diagnosis, in a practice, logical manner by detailed history and systemic clinical examination. Special emphasis is given to the examination and evaluation of apparently healthy babies and detection of minor developmental defects.
I am thankful to my wife Dr P. Chethana Arvind for her professional help and correction of the script. It will be unfair on my part if I do not express gratitude to the gems of my family; Kumari Rachana and Master Shikar.
