5Preface
The world including India is changing fast. We are in 21 century. The changes are due to modernization, Globalization, Information technology, Space technology, bio technology, Genetics and other emerging fields. India has a contrasting picture of rapid urban developments with all modern amenities compared to backward rural and tribal packets. India also suffers in poverty, illetracy, illhealth, over population, superstions and regional imbalances.
All the professions including medicine and health practices are undergoing a change due to technological and scientific developments. On has to update his/her knowledge and skills at least once in 2 years or even 6 months sometimes. Along with the professionals. Para professionals workers including Para medicals have to be alert about the changes.
During the college days students of Para Medical courses should develop a sound understanding a physiology, anatomy, pharmacology but also acquire basic knowledge of psychology and sociology. A study of psychology helps to know life stages, behavior patterns from child hood to old age, emotional and social behavior, Basic needs and motives, conflicts, adjustments, group behaviour, the process of learning, personality make up, change of attitudes, motivating individuals and groups in improving health standards. So also a study of sociological aspects helps in understanding of groups (primary, secondary), various social processes like cooperation, conflict, adjustment. Also one learns about laws, traditions, customs in the society, social control, social startification, characteristics of urban and rural communities, Administrative patterns of panchayats, municipalities and corporations, role of community health services (PHC, taluk and district level, state level, hospitals) and health services and so on.
Thus the paramedical persons, who will be the torch bearers in the offing, should have a clear understanding of both aspects of the individual, society, social institutions so that he/she can be a role model for others.6
I hope that the present book will be useful as a text book. This should be followed by further reading of reference books and clarification and clearing of doubts from the teaching staff of vocational colleges. Fields visits to important institutions followed by some case studies will go a long way to enrich the knowledge skills and change of attitudes.
