5PREFACE
Pregnancy is a time of joy and anticipation. It can also be a time of anxiety and concern. While most pregnancies and childbirth are uneventful, all pregnancies are at risk. About 15% of all pregnant women develop a potentially life threatening complication that calls for skilled care and some will require a major obstetrical intervention to survive. The safe motherhood initiative of WHO recommends that skills of health workers should be improved through locally adopted guidelines and standards for the management of pregnancy and childbirth.
This booklet outline guidelines for the obstetrical problems that are commonly encountered in the casualty and labour room. They have been drawn up as a result of experience by the consultants as well as from the guidelines from the department of Reproductive Health and Research, WHO 2000.

6FOREWORD
I really congratulate Dr Radha Bai Prabhu for her concern for the laboring mothers and their wellbeing. Hence, the IOG Commission has formulated the guidelines and recommendations for the intrapartum management at the present scenario.
After going through the protocol, I think it will be of immense help to the medical fraternity and the beneficiaries.
This Obstetric Konar Notes is a pearl taken from the blue sea, which is subjected to refinement. I hope that everybody will be benefited by this pocket book. I wish that many more such books would be delivered after this.
