I have gone through the “Textbook of Sports Medicine” by Dr Laila Das, the noted Sports Medicine Specialist in the Sports Authority of India. I was highly impressed by the in depth study of the various types of injuries sportspersons in different disciplines of sports are prone to. But more than a study of the causes of injuries, what appeared to be more important to me is the specific guideline to sportspersons about how to prevent injuries during training and practice. The book should be strongly recommended for coaches whose primary responsibility is to ensure optimum performance without causing injuries. While it has been acknowledged that injuries cannot always be prevented, the author has stressed on the need to minimize the chances of injury. The book deals in an exhaustive manner the quickest remedy for injuries which could not be prevented or occurred in spite of due care and caution.
Apart from injuries and their treatment, the author has not missed out on the importance of maintaining good health. The chapters on sports nutrition and common exercises for fitness should benefit everyone participating in sports. Not many of our budding sports persons are aware of the necessity of correct food and exercise for enhancement of performance in their respective sports. This book should be an eye opener for them.
The author has drawn upon her vast experience in the management of sports injuries and maintenance of good health and mind. The book should be thoroughly studied not only by Coaches, Trainees and sportspersons but also by all involved in the administration of sports. It would be an excellent reference book for all of them and should find a place in the libraries of all sports academies and institutions in particular. The author deserves all accolades for bringing out such an important and useful book.

6Preface
It is customary to write a preface for a new book, hence this attempt. There are some excellent Textbooks already written in the subject. So many people might be curious, why I have taken up this project. Sports Medicine was still in its infancy in our country, when I entered the profession. Although armed with a postgraduate qualification in the subject, I faced many a problem during my daily work as a sports doctor of country's largest sports organization. Practical solutions for these problems were unknown to me at that time and I had to focus blindly in the dark to search for them. Although this book is titled “Textbook of Sports Medicine”, it is actually a humble attempt to note down my practical experiences in the trade for almost eighteen years. I have neither followed the syllabus of any particular university, nor have I gone deep into the theory part of any particular topic. Instead, I have tried to present the practical problems faced daily by a sports doctor with their solutions, with a hope that it will help the new entrants in the field and the sports community at large. That is why the topics like ‘Air travel and medical problems’ or, ‘Medico legal problems in sports’ are included in this book. Even after my best efforts to cover everything, there remain some lapses in this book as usual. I leave it to the readers of this book to point them out, so that I shall be able to rectify them in future editions, if any. Thanking my numerous well wishers.
Laila Das
7Acknowledgements
I am grateful to my family, especially my husband Rajat and my children Rohit and Rohini, without whose silent co-operation, inspiration and tolerance my dream of completing the project would never have been possible.
I am also thankful to my colleague Dr M Bhattacharya and all other staffs of the Sports Medicine Centre, SAI East for the assistance rendered by them, without which this book would have never seen the light of the day.
