Foreword
Miss Veena Slaich has already written a very useful book which outlines simple and usable occupational therapy required for the disabled. The present work is wider in scope and is very useful. Miss Slaich has a way in putting things very clearly and readers will find the book not only easy to read, but also very informative. She has put a great deal of effort into the present volume and with her rich experience in the field of occupational therapy, both as a practitioner as well as a teacher, the book ought to prove very valuable. Occupational therapy is one of the most important means of bringing about the gradual adjustment of a disabled person not only to his disability but also to as normal a life as possible. More needs to be known about this particular treatment: if we need more research to expand its scope and application. I have no doubt that Miss Slaich’s book will assist this process considerably.

Preface
Progress in occupational therapy has been many bounds over the years in our country from the crafts as therapeutic tools to sophisticated computerised gadgets available to occupational therapist in present times. The chapters on disability training in advance countries, services to the civilian population, and rehabilitation of disabled ex-servicemen give a brief account of these aspect to OT.
The book covers some aspects of prosthetic fittings, crutches, occupational therapy for the mentally impaired children on certain aspects of their life. The need was felt to consolidate the related aids required for the fuller functional training to disabled by the occupational therapists.
Most commonly affected by the functional capacity reduced are due to amputation of either of extremities. This poses a great challenge to occupational therapists in functional rehabilitation of amputees.
Author feels that a basic knowledge on orthotics and prosthetics to occupational therapist is very essential because they are the persons responsible to rehabilitate these amputees in their day-to-day activities. This gives freedom to amputees in their pursuits of functional independence.
Use of crutches, canes, spinal braces are very important assistive devices and trunk supports respectively for training in mobility and amputation to these cases. What are types and how they are constructed to the use of disabled play an important role in the process of treatment of the patients with different disability as sometimes its disability determines the type of materials to be used for any assistive appliance. These appliances are tailor made as per needs of an individual patient to fulfil the functions and uses for which they are intended.8
Mental subnormality is another area of disability practice of occupational therapists who are responsible to train different IQ ranges children with suitable and appropriate activities offered by occupational therapy.
These children often pose problems for the class teacher who has to teach them and give knowledge in 3 R’s (reading, writing, and arithmetic) which are very basic to human life skills in primary skills development for learning more which helps learn complex activities relevant to their lifestyle and background.
Training in manual arts to mentally subnormal children helps improve their manual skills to compensate for their lesser mental abilities. Use of leisure time constructively is another area where school teacher can play a very important role. The leisure time could be used in play, music, art of utilising leisure time training, singing, rhythmic activities, drawing, and painting are few to mention. An occupational therapist can concentrate on establishing interests and hobbies in such disabilities to improve surrounding and home. Occupational therapist contributes to provide knowledge of community recreational opportunities also to subnormals.
The importance of tricycle for lower limb amputees has to offer a great potential to rehabilitate them in mobility and ambulation. The functional training is very important area of functional rehabilitation.
Similarly, ankle treadle is an equipment which rehabilitate the functions of an ankle joint if it gets implicated in diseases, or paralysis due to different causes. Author hopes, the readers find this book useful in their clinical practice during their professional careers.9
