7CONTRIBUTORS 12FOREWORD
It is a great pleasure to have the opportunity to write the foreword for this excellent and much needed book Gynecological Cancer.
Gynecological cancers constitute the major burden of cancer in women in India, accounting for nearly 30 percent of all cancers in women. In the last decade, there has been an explosion of new evidence pertaining to gynecological cancers - in the form of randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses, which has forced us to redefine the treatment protocols for these cancers, with the aims of improvement in outcome as well as preservation of organ, function and fertility in suitable patients. I am happy that this publication has tried to look at all the available evidence pertaining to these cancers.
It is clear from the published literature that outcome of women with gynecological cancers is related to subspecialty training of the treating clinician. Women afflicted with these cancers should ideally be treated by those with appropriate level of expertise – either Gynecologic Oncologists or Gynecologists with special interest and training in Gynecologic Oncology. This book should prove valuable to both Gynecologic Oncologists and Gynecologists with special interest in Gynecologic Oncology by providing a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art in Gynecologic Oncology. It includes the underlying concepts, discusses the current state of our knowledge and practice and provides the reader with information sufficient to understand new developments that will affect the future of this subspecialty. It is conducive to both easy reference and complete reading. The book also employs a pragmatic approach towards application of new technological advances to developing countries like India.
This book incorporates contributions from expert authors from different fields, underscoring the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to the management of gynecological cancers. The knowledge of the information in this book is essential to all individuals concerned with the challenges of gynecological cancers.
I must congratulate Dr CN Purandare for his vision and efforts in bringing out this excellent review of Gynecological Cancers. As a practicing Gynecologic Oncologist, I look forward to having this important reference source close at hand as I engage in the increasingly complex clinical care of patients afflicted with gynecological cancers.

13PREFACE
When you are interested in something, you do it only because it is convenient; when you are committed, you accept only results, not excuses.
Kenneth Blanchard
It has been my longtime desire to write a comprehensive book on gynecological oncology. A gynecologist interested in the field of oncology or an oncologist practicing purely in the field of gynecology needs to study and concentrate in depth to give justice to the patient in terms of better five years survival rate and quality of life.
Unfortunately both a General Gynecologist and a General Oncosurgeon treat many cases resulting in a poor outcome for the patient.
Keeping this in mind an extensive coverage is given to all subjects so that this desktop book is a ready reckoner to all concerned to give optimal treatment.
The editors have taken special care to maintain the continuity throughout the book with up-to-date information.
I thank all the contributors to this book for taking pains in order to make this book a reality.
