6FOREWORD
Last century witnessed an explosion of technology in every field including the medical profession. Today the practice of medicine has changed and will continue to change but the concern for the welfare of the patient amongst doctors will always remain the same. There is plethora of literature available everywhere but for medical professionals to accomplish their goal of patient welfare they have to have access not only to the latest but step by step simple and clear instructions for practical and day to day procedures.
The book Operative Obstetrics: Common Procedures and General Care Principles brought out by Col Randhir Puri provides precise and relevant knowledge in simple and workable format for postgraduate students and practising gynaecologists. I complement the author and all those who have worked on this book.
It is a privilege to have been asked to pen this foreword. I am confident the book will be a useful hands-on resource for students and practising colleagues.

8PREFACE
The aim of presenting this booklet of procedures in operative Obstetrics with basic principles involved, is to give Step by Step activity which is not only evidence based as good practice, as well is easy to perform and do.
The steps enumerated throughout are practical and generally address the query that How to do this method, procedure or operative procedure?
This practical guideline is author centric with all inputs from standard literature existing with practical tips imbibed in from teachers, colleagues, visuals from various surgeons operating over the years, practicing obstetricians. One of them has contributed generously through personal communication, discussion and offered constructive comments generously and continuously. I acknowledge the effort.
It is our intention to limit to one type of methodology for procedures and surgeries so that you follow a standardised activity which will give you confidence to practice and master the technique. One is free to develop and enhance skills thereafter.
It is a sincere hope that students, and practicing professionals, be they trainees or established in practice, will benefit from this venture.9
This effort is dedicated to my valuable and reverend teachers during my training and initial years of practice, as well as to all well wishers, family, particularly my son Anirudh (4th yr MBBS student) for whom, it may form basis of future professional activities.
I am personally indebted to Dr. Narendra Malhotra and Dr. Jaideep Malhotra for being a constant source of encouragement and proven to be a valuable good friends for last decade or so.
I sincerely acknowledge contributions of Lt Col Anand Shanker, anaesthesiologist for contributing chapter on ‘Anesthesia in Obstetrics’, Ms Chetna Sharma for making very clear and vivid sketches, Ms Neharika Malhotra for well defined pictures of various procedures being done and Lt Col Suresh Chandra for designing the front page and various others for giving positive, valuable suggestions at various stages. Mr. Tarun Duneja, General Manager (Publishing), Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers, New Delhi, finds a special mention at this juncture.
Comments, suggestions and constructive criticism, is welcome in time for future.
Hope you will enjoy the effort!!
