5CONTRIBUTORS 7FOREWORD
Let me congratulate Nikhilendu De Mazumder, for conceptualising to edit a multi-author book on Paediatric Orthopaedics. The importance of a multi-author book is to collect information from different authors who have been working on our people for years and have gained experience. Though the basic pathology is more or less the same based on the physiology, but their character changes with the local environment, nutrition, habit and economy. Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.
Let this book act as an epicentre to increase our knowledge in this facet of medicine.
Present days education in orthopaedics depends on evidence-based analysis of our work in the journals and books. Hence, whatever has been collected in this book is evidence-based to achieve a knowledge of excellence with safety.
N De Mazumder has always had a quest for learning since his inception as a student, as I saw him at RG Kar Medical College Kolkata as a student and as a House Surgeon and subsequently as an Associate, and lastly as a Professor and the Head of the Dept. of Orthopaedics at RK Mission Seva Pratishthan and Vivekananda Institute of Medical Sciences Kolkata for Postgraduate students. His original work is on CTEV correction by dynamic splints.
Among his many publications, in the national and international journals the latest one, the book on Neonatal Orthopaedics is worth mentioning.
I hope the readers of this book will find the most current concept of the disease and treatment modalities for most difficult problems in our country for our people.

9PREFACE
Emergence of Paediatric Orthopaedics as a subject has made definite improvement in the treatment of orthopaedic conditions and trauma in children and adolescents. The learning curve in paediatric orthopaedics is steep as the process of diagnosis of the diseased condition is benefit of subjective assistance from the patient. Further, the subject Paediatric Orthopaedics has had teething trouble and only a few people are interested to nurture it, helping it to grow to maturity. Hence, the subject needs critical appreciation and step by step analysis and study to come to a perfect understanding. In my book ‘Neonatal Orthopaedics’ the diagnosis and treatment of neonatal orthopaedic conditions have been emphasized to achieve better treatment and results. Stress has been given in the present book on the clinicopathological aspect of paediatric orthopaedic conditions to arrive at a correct diagnosis and formulate an acceptable treatment. The present book has had contributions from other authors, who have written on subjects on which they have worked. Some of them are my teachers and are vastly experienced to express in explicit terms their teachings to embellish the subject for the readers. The book is divided into two parts—general orthopaedic conditions and regional orthopaedics disorders and injuries. The description of the subject is given in twenty-seven chapters with many subheadings. The chapters are written with references, which are given at the end of each. Illustrations are given to substantiate facts consisting of photographs—both clinical and imaging. An attempt has been made to analyse some of the conditions, especially the treatment part, by line drawings, drawn by the author. The details of operative techniques have not been given.
A book on Paediatric Orthopaedics was much needed. The readers were content so long with books on Paediatric Orthopaedics from other countries. An attempt has been made to bring out an exclusive book on the subject in a textbook pattern, which can arouse interest on paediatric orthopaedic problems among young orthopaedic surgeons.
My acknowledgement goes to M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd., New Delhi, who took all pains in publishing this book. Authors, who have contributed in this book, deserve my grateful appreciation. To the large number of patients, whose helpful participation was key to the successful completion of this work, I owe my gratitude. I am indebted to Sailendra Bhattacharyya, the pioneer in the field of orthopaedics in our country, who enrich me with a foreword and has contributed an article in this book. I am grateful to those who have silently helped in various capacities in bringing out this book. I consider any success as the blessings of the Almighty and the failure as a lapse on my part.
