Ocular emergencies comprise a range of conditions often with sight threatening propensity of which ocular infection is one of them. It is pronounced in developing and under-developed countries. Patients with an ocular infection tend to seek consolation and treatment early, because of their dramatic and sudden onset, when eye care facilities are available and accessible to them.
Professor Anita Panda has long experience in ophthalmology, with special interest in the cornea. For her vast experience in corneal infection she was awarded with Dr V Mahadevan best research award by International College of Surgeon in 1999 and Dr P Siva Reddy award on paediatric keratitis by All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) in 2003. Her book Ocular Infections is a useful practical manual that would be a resource even for non-ophthalmic personnel, such as general practitioners and medical officers, and specialists in other disciplines, who may be confronted with an ocular emergency, in their own field.
Professor Panda is to be complimented for bringing out this useful publication, which should serve as a ready reckoner, for undergraduate, postgraduate, postdoctoral students and specialists who from time-to-time may be confronted with an ocular infection.

11Preface
Ever-increasing specialization has made necessary and inevitable to specify the need of emergency not only to the ophthalmologist but also to all the medical fraternity. Ocular infection is one such condition which accounts for considerable visual impairment and blindness leading to economic loss. Despite continuous advances of medical knowledge and technology, various infections have continued to occur all over the world. Increased and indiscriminate use of antibiotics, have also added additional dimensions to the problem of ocular infections, because newer generations of organisms have come up with more resistance to antibiotics than its parent strain. Similarly, irrational use of topical corticosteroids adds to the problem. Due to availability of newer antimicrobials, the ophthalmic fraternity are in a better position to control these infections. Further, with advances in surgical technology even almost a lost eye gets benefited.
A detailed description and discussion of the individual problem is outside the scope of this text. Only a multivolume encyclopedic work could possibly accomplish such a task. However, effort has been made to explain some of them in a descriptive fashion enabling the reader to better understand, diagnose and manage the various infections of the eye and adnexa. I hope it will be of value as a concise reference text for both postgraduate and postdoctorate levels. One of the greatest challenges in creating this book is its organization. An attempt has been made to adhere to fairly traditional ocular infections, while at the same time taking into account some other information that allows to complete the list.
This book is the product of the collective efforts of many hundreds of well-wishers, foremost being my dear students. Additional thanks go to the staff of M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi whose persistence was crucial to the completion of this project. I am deeply indebted to my professional colleagues for it is due to their critical queries that lead to completing this book. Finally, despite best efforts, ventures of this kind are not likely to be free of human error and typographic mistakes. Therefore, feedback from the user will be of utmost help in improving second edition of the book.
