5FOREWORD
Dr (Mrs) Urjita S Zingade, Professor and Head, Department of Physiology, Govt. Medical College, Aurangabad has contributed immensly for the development of subject over past twenty five years. In her distinguished career as Lecturer, Associate Professor and Professor she has gained deep insight in the subject and the difficulties of the medical students in understanding the same.
With the advances made in the subject and imposition of ban on animal experiments it was getting very difficult for medical students to understand the principles of functioning of various organ systems in the body. Therefore, the emphasis in teaching Experimental Physiology shifted from animal experiments to Haematology, Clinical and Experiments in Biophysics. This change has not only enabled students to understand the principles of subject but also has given them a tool to grasp Applied Physiology properly.
Nobody more than Dr Zingade deserves to be known as Clinical Physiologist. Slowly but steadily she has matured as Clinical Physiologist and as an “Understanding Teacher”. Present book is written keeping in view the advances made in the subject and the syllabai of various Universities for MBBS course specially Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik.
I am sure, it will be rated as one of the best books available for all students and teachers of Physiology specially for the first MBBS students.

7PREFACE
I have an immense pleasure to introduce Manual of Practical Physiology for undergraduate medical students. This book has been written with an aim to cope up with the changing trends in medical education. There is a dynamic change in core of the subject and trends in teaching technology. More stress is given on applied aspects of the preclinical subjects. The ways and means of assessment of a student also has changed drastically. A student has to attain perfection in competitive type of assessment. So as a teacher also; one has to change their view, ideas and methodology for training a student. There are so many books available on Practical Physiology, so question may arise what is the need of a new book in the series. I think, I have tried to justify the changing needs of the students as they should have sufficient theoretical knowledge in minimum span of time. I have given priority and sufficient weightage to clinical section as maximum marks in practical physiology are allotted to clinical examination. Even an attempt has been made to take an account of pathophysiology of different disease processes at proper places. So even a final MBBS student can refer to this book to have a reference when he is reading practical subject as a basis of medicine or surgery. An attempt has been made to give an elaborate account of procedures for performing different physiology practicals so students can learn the motor skill for attaining perfection in practical examination. Sufficient related theoretical details have been discussed in each practical. Wherever possible sufficient related questions have also been introduced, with the expectation that these questions will be answered by the students after they complete the experiment. I hope this book will prove to be a ready reckoner for first MBBS students.
I am greatly thankful to Dr AB Solepure, who has been a constant source of inspiration for writing up this book I can not forget Dr Chandrakant Shirole, who is my Guru in the subject and who has almost taught me what is an ideal teacher. I am indebted to my colleagues, my friends and advisors Dr ST Khan, Dr MA Kulkarni, Dr Sayeeda Afroz, Dr SP Chaudhari, Dr Anjali Shete, Dr Jaya, Dr Kate who have given me moral support in completing this task. Mr Anil Joshi and Mahendra Kulkarni have helped me to complete this difficult task.
I can't thank, the great support given to me by my husband Dr SB Zingade and my daughters Meeta and Shweta, in dry words as it may belittle them because without their support this work would have not been possible at all. I am really indebted to Mr Ashok Dahale whose tired-less efforts have made my dream come into reality.
Lastly and not the least, this book I have written in sweet memories of my father Mr GV Abhange whom I dedicate this book.
