5Preface
For a pregnant woman, drug abuse is doubly dangerous. Firstly, drugs may harm her own health, interfering with her ability to support the pregnancy. Secondly, some drugs can directly impair prenatal development. Some drugs can be harmful when used at any time during pregnancy; others, however, are particularly damaging at specific stages.
Till date no comprehensive book regarding drugs used during pregnancy has been published. It is our duty to analyse potential risks along with potential benefits of drugs used during pregnancy and its effects on the baby.
This book is not only highlighted-development of baby in utero, teratogenesis and other adverse effects of drugs during pregnancy, major teratogenic effects on pregnancy, common drugs used in pregnancy and its effects on neonates, but also focussed alcohol, drug addiction, smoking during pregnancy and their effects on baby, and lastly role of progesterone and hCG treatment in early pregnancy and their safety.
I am very much thankful to Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers to publish this book. Lastly this book will definitely help the practicing obstetrician in day-to-day practice.
