7Preface
Man's ability to ignite fire was probably his first step towards civilization. Fire helped nomadic man to settle down, preserve, hold and cook his food. However, during the process of close proximity with fire, the energy source, man kept injuring himself from fire and sustaining burns. Today's incidence of burns and how we manage burns is an indirect indication of how a society's health care policy takes care of its people.
Burn destroys not only the skin and other structures but it leaves behind permanent scar of injury which not only hampers the patient physically but also breaks them mentally and emotionally. The trauma and pain suffered by all the patients who have been treated by us has inspired us to write this book so that every medical practitioner is able to manage burns in the initial stages.
In this book we are providing step by step understanding about burns, how it affects the human body, how to manage and rehabilitate a burn victim. This book provides practical and workable solutions which are deliberately kept simple and at some places complex situations have been over-simplified so that it becomes user-friendly and the basic management of burns can be accomplished not only by Plastic Surgeons but also by General Surgeons and General Physicians.8
Wherever there are controversies, different views have been given but emphatically one view is provided which we feel is better. We have avoided dogmas and our aim has been to provide simplified methods in developing scientific temper for management of burns not only by Plastic Surgeons but also by General Surgeons and General Practitioners as well.
We are thankful to Dr RP Narayan and Dr VK Tiwari for their constant support and encouragement.
