5FOREWORD
I am pleased to review the manuscript written by Dr. Pushpendra Magon and write a foreword. Having read it, I am even happier to recommend this book to my colleagues, students and practitioners. It is well organized, concise and a thorough book.
The book reflects the training received by Dr P Magon having worked in well recognized Institutions like Christian Medical College and Lady Hardinge Medical College in India. For the past several years he actively taught and practiced pediatrics with skill acquired during his career. He is the editor of the pediatric journals of Vinayaka Missions' Medical College. I commend him for his efforts and venture.

6PREFACE
When I decided to write this book, with the objective of describing my clinical observations of the past decade, I was well aware of the challenges in authoring a book. The challenges lay in the attempt to describe clinical observations through text, pictures and flowcharts. The goal was to provide students with an understanding of the principles of pediatrics that could be used in the diagnosis, care, and prevention of childhood illnesses.
It saddened me to think that most students would, like me, have to spend their precious time and energy to collect, assess, and prioritize information. This book grew out of my concern that other overwhelmed students should not have to duplicate my efforts to gather and organize information. I wanted to blend basic technical information in easy-to-understand language and provide an insight of my experiences as well as of teachers, who have all felt the hope, helplessness, anger, panic, ignorance, and anguish alongside their patients. I wanted to offer tips to make learning easier.
Medical students are primary beneficiaries, but the book will also be of interest to all healthcare professionals. Amidst the plethora of ‘information’ in which physicians now work, there is more than ever, a need for a fixed point of reference, something by which clinical medicine can be enjoyed and practiced.
How this book is organized?
I have organized the book sequentially. The book has 138 Chapters divided into 18 Sections on body systems and special topics. The first time I introduced a topic which I have defined it in the text.
The practice of medicine is initiated by a patient talking with a physician and followed by physical examination and investigation to diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. This forms the bulk of my book. Each chapter has a Bibliography at the end. In colored boxes, a few tips and points to remember are given. The writing is clear and direct, and the emphasis has been made to make it a valuable handbook of pediatrics covering a catena of topics. This book not only explains the disease and treatment but also offers education for prevention. In addition, bound in this book is a photo gallery of children during their treatment.
Obtaining a basic understanding of topics and how to interpret clinical features can only improve the quality of patient' life. My hope is that students who read this book will encounter medical facts simply explained, and will feel confident.7
My suggestions for a positive way to use this book:
Consider reading chaptersection wise. I have struggled to keep each chapter short and the technical information easy to read. If you want to go in greater depth, bibliography is helpful.
Acknowledgements:
There is a special place in my heart, for the superb medvarsity of our medical school. It was only after I took to the web and I searched web sites available, joined newsgroups and scrolled through more pages then I could count that it gave me the most realistic well rounded idea.
Without the many men and women who helped me personally, this book would never have come to be. My sincere thanks to my parents, elder brother and sister-in-law, my wife, Dr Shally Magon, my teachers, colleagues and students for their support and encouragement and Mr. Rajmohan and EDP staff of Vinayaka Missions' Medical College for technical help. A special thanks to Dr Rakesh Magon and Dr Haninder Magon for valuable contributions in section on psychiatry.
I hope that all my hard work has been worth while; in that knowledge gained through this book will help you make the most educated decisions possible regarding patient care.
Pushpendra Magon
