5Contributors 7Foreword
It is indeed a great pleasure of mine to write a foreword for this useful and handy book on contraception. The chapters on demographic profile, bone health, biostatistics and assisted reproductive technology (ART) guidelines add more color and importance to this book. Chapters on national rural health mission, medical termination of pregnancy and reproductive tract infections are very important for postgraduates students, and for those who are practicing gynecology. This publication from the Maulana Azad Medical College faculty will go a long way in propagating education amongst the obstetric and gynecology fraternity. Such publications form the baseline for understanding the common needs of women's health.
Federation of Obstetric and Gynecological Societies of India's (FOGSI) call this year is to educate, prevent and eradicate.
Educate
-
Self, FOGSIANS, society, adolescent girls
Prevent
-
Maternal deaths, unsafe abortions, unwanted pregnancies, cancers
Eradicate
-
Anemia, unemployment, illiteracy, pollution
Only if we can do this, we can have a new Indian woman, literate and healthier.
I congratulate the editors and the contributors and the department of obstetrics and gynecology, Maulana Azad Medical College, for bringing out such a wonderful publication.
Dr. Narendra Malhotra
President FOGSI 2008
8Preface
The concerns regarding the maternal and child health have led to the formulation of several national programs over the past few decades. Also contraception, which is an important issue closely related to reproductive health has undergone evolution in recent times. However, there is a dearth of books addressing these important aspects. Consequently, there has been a growing demand from the postgraduate students for an appropriate book covering the various health issues in women. The authors, therefore, have undertaken the task of writing this book.
The book has been divided into four sections. The first section deals with the demographic patterns in India and the world related to family welfare, and have been covered in detail by the authors.
The second section deals with contraception. There has been a sea change in the methodologies adopted for prevention of the unwanted births. The chapters included in this section systematically describe the basic and current practices in intrauterine contraception device, combined oral contraceptives, progesterone only pill, injectables, implants, emergency contraception, permanent methods in male and female including no scalpel vasectomy, and recent advances. In addition, WHO medical eligibility criteria have been described in Appendix I for every method at the end of the book.
The third section focuses on current health issues and national programs for women. The chapters on national rural health mission, maternal health and women empowerment, reproductive and child health, adolescent health, bone health in women are absolutely relevant for the postgraduate students desirous of knowing current national programs and issues. The guidelines regarding medical termination of pregnancy, sterilization, reproductive tract infections, prevention of parent-to-child transmission, prenatal diagnostic techniques act and assisted reproductive technology are a must for every gynecologist's armour.
Lastly, the fourth section has a chapter on biostatistics that describes basics of medical statistics applicable to any research methodology. It will be immensely useful to everyone for the analysis of the scientific data.
We have tried to make the book concise and relevant to current issues and hope that the readers will find it valuable.
We would like to thank the various contributors to this book, members of the staff of the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maulana Azad Medical College and Lok Nayak Hospital for their help. We take the opportunity to thank Mr. Subrato, Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd. for his co-operation.
We acknowledge the patience, support and guidance extended by our family members during this period.
