Abstract

Quite a proportion of infants and children with surgical problems first report to the pediatrician for advice. A reasonable knowledge of the field assists him in seeking timely referral to a pediatric surgeon. The Chapter starts with description of gastrointestinal problems such congenital hypertrophic as pyloric stenosis, hiatal hernia, esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, duodenal and other intestinal atresia’s, intestinal malrotation, intussusceptions, Hirschsprung’s disease (congenital megacolon), meconium plug syndrome, meconium ileus, Meckel’s diverticulum, necrotizing enterocolitis and appendicitis; anorectal problems and anomalies related to the umbilicus. Then come the anomalies of hepatobiliary system, e.g. as extrahepatic biliary atresia, choledochal cysts. Text on genitourinary problems includes obstructive uropathy, primary bladder stone disease, phimosis, hypospadias and epispadias. Inguinoscrotal problems dealt with are inguinal hernia, undescended testes (cryptorchidism), epididymo-orchitis, and acute scrotum. Last but one, lucid though brief descriptions concerning such head and neck problems as cystic hygroma, brachial cyst, brachial sinus and fistula and sternomastoid tumor are provided. Finally, a brief note on aspects of “abscess” relevant to a pediatrician closes on the chapter.
