Abstract

The major theme of the chapter is that community pediatrics is a concept rather than a branch of pediatrics, implying thereby that health is determined by interaction between the child, his environment and the society in which he lives. It is by no means a measurable quantity, independent of this vital relationship. In simple terms, community pediatrics denotes pediatrics as it applies to the child, his family and the community. The objective is to carry the healthcare to the doorstep of the needy through various categories of workers, including those trained at grass-root level. Such important areas as preventive pediatrics, social pediatrics, family health, under-5s clinics, baby-friendly hospital initiative, WHO/UNICEF’s ten steps to successful breastfeeding, school health services, juvenile delinquencies, maternal and child health, integrated child development services scheme, child labor, street children, handicapped children, girl child, prevention of accidents, child abuse and neglect, India’s national health programs and integrated management of neonatal and childhood illness strategy are explicitly described. A refreshing description of television viewing and its repercussions on the child is available towards the conclusion of the chapter. The probable adverse effects of excessive or erratic TV viewing include infringement on child’s time meant for studies, play, sports, hobbies, etc. Secondly, much-too-much of snack-eating during TV viewing and reduction in activity results in overweight and obesity. Thirdly, there is enhancement of incidence of adolescent delinquency and violence secondary to viewing of violent TV programs. Finally, behavioral problems secondary to violent, horror or adult programs are common.
