6Foreword
Since the introduction by Ian McDonald in 1958, ultrasound has improved dramatically and is now the most important noninvasive technique in obstetrics and gynaecology. Ultrasound is used in many diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. This book discusses very elegantly various important aspects of ultrasound in obstetrics and gynaecology including basic physics and safety, Doppler ultrasonography, prenatal diagnosis of congenital abnormalities and the application of ultrasound in infertility. Furthermore, a chapter deals on new developments like 3-Dimensional ultrasound.
This book contains important new data and clear illustrations and is therefore highly recommended for gynaecologists, residents, medical students and ultrasonographers.

7Preface
I have been involved in ultrasound for gynaecological and obstetric diagnostic, therapeutic purposes since 1984. In the process, I realized the dearth of training facility and non-availability of readily available reading material.
This is an attempt for present students; and might leave scope for improvement, but to quote Albert Einstein “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new”.
I hope this book is of benefit to their learning process.
