5Preface
The Atlas of Periodontics is written as a guide for students and practitioners with a special interest in periodontics. It is not intended as a textbook for the established practitioner in the specialty, for in a book of this size, it is impossible to cover all the aspects of the subject in detail. This book is primarily an introductory text for dental students and suitable for general practitioners and post-graduate students.
This book gives a comprehensive and up to date pictures about the various types of periodontal diseases, pathogenesis and state-of-the-art surgical and non-surgical therapies. It has a wide range of illustrations and photographs, depicting the details of various periodontal procedures.
It is always said that teachers continue to learn only when they have students. This is very true in my experience and my special thanks to all my students who have helped me all along.
The subject matter, diagrams and photographs are all developed over a period of time under the influence of my teachers Dr RP Nayak, Dr CD Dwarkanath and 6my colleagues and close co-operation from my post graduate students.
I have had a good fortune to work closely with great periodontists all the time. One such person Dr Sarita Narayan, who had a great influence on my thinking, my respect and gratitude towards her and all other friends are profound.
