5Foreword
It gives me immense pleasure to write this forward for this Step by Step series book on Neonatology. It is an excellent effort to guide medical practitioners and students about the day-to-day problems encountered. The practising obstetrician is many a times the first one to have a look at the newborn and in certain situations may have to do the initial resuscitation procedures.
This step by step book is meant to sensitize and orient the practising doctors to neonatology, which in itself is a separate subspecialty. The photographs are self-explanatory and the language of the chapters is simple to understand. I am confident that this book will serve the purpose for which it is intended and students, post-graduates, nurses, and practising obstetricians will immensely benefit.

6Preface
Obstetricians are the people who deal with neonate at the first instance in the delivery room. They are the ones, on whose acumen or ability depends the life of a neonate. Since there is no formal training in teaching curriculum for neonatology aspects of neonate, so with this aim an attempt has been made to bring about a guide to subspecialty of neonatology, from the point of view of an obstetrician.
This book deals with common problems faced by obstetricians, accoucheurs, nurses and paramedical staff. The conditions like Apnea, MAS, Seizures, etc. are the conditions that need immediate attention. Moreover, it is essential to know resuscitation of baby at birth.
The book has been divided into four parts:
i. Neonatology,
iia. Management protocols for common neonatal problems
iib. Procedures for NICU
iii. Essential equipment supplies
iv. Drugs
All topics are well covered in this book.
Authors sincerely hope that reader will benefit from this book!!
