always my inspiration and strength6
7Contributors 9Preface
I began working on number Eleven of the Recent Advances in Surgery series within weeks of a great upheaval at home. My beloved wife had only just passed on after a long illness. But I knew that solace was only to be found within the certainties—and challenges—of surgery.
This volume chronicles some of those challenges, which have been faced down by surgical practitioners around the world through innovation and technique.
The updates on various areas of surgery is a reminder of their value in growth and evolution. The chapter on how to manage mass casualties in terrorist attacks is sadly needed in much of the world now. Stem cell research and tissue engineering is noteworthy as this is the need of the time. The radioisotopes in diagnosis, molecular approach to treatment, genetics, interventional radiology and the bio-mechanical insight into wound healing, depict a healthy integration of various scientific disciplines. The six sigma methodology illustrates the extent to which surgical care, like any other field needs quality improvement tools.
I would like to thank the contributors to this volume for generous sharing of their insight and knowledge. This 300 page book contains only a fraction of their vast cumulative experience.
As always I am grateful to my publisher, Shri Jitendar P Vij (Chairman and Managing Director) of M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi and his team as I could not have completed the book without their support.
